LAREDO, TX _ The Vaqueros scrapped and battled the nation’s No. 1 NPSL club closer than any team so far in Laredo this summer but fell 1-0 to the Heat in South Texas on Tuesday.
The loss means Fort Worth enters the playoffs on Saturday at home against either Brownsville (the fifth seed) or Shreveport (No. 6) depending on the outcome of Wednesday’s Midland-Odessa Sockers versus Houston Regals match.
“Our boys showed incredible pride and fought for the shirt like no other group of Vaqueros in the past five years on Tuesday despite the loss,” Vaqueros general manager Tobias Xavier Lopez said. “A full day of travel, scorching temperatures and a thin roster couldn’t prevent the boys from a magnificent effort even in the loss.”
The Vaqueros return to the playoffs for the second year in a row under the guidance of coach Nick Stavrou.
Fort Worth will finish third with a Midland loss or draw on Wednesday or fourth with a Sockers victory.
The Lone Star Conference playoffs allow the top 2 teams a bye while No. 3 hosts No. 6 and the 4th place side to host the No. 5 seed.
