FORT WORTH _ Vaqueros forward Jamie Lovegrove scored a pair of goals as Fort Worth held on for a 3-2 victory against the Midland-Odessa Sockers on Saturday.
The Vaqueros (3-0, 9 points) jumped out to a 3-0 halftime lead, including the third and eventual game-winner by Lovegrove on a penalty kick.
“Everybody from (goalkeeper) Marko (Jovanovic) to me up top, everyone from the starting 11, excellent performance from everyone,” Lovegrove said. “We showed how good we can be at times.”
Bobby Edet opened the scoring for the Vaqueros. Lovegrove scored his first of the night off a stellar assist from outside back Rio Ramirez.
Midland (1-1, 3 points) didn’t go quietly despite being down 3-0 at the half. The Sockers fought back with a pair of second-half goals to keep the game thrilling to the end.
The Lone Star Conference matchup was selected as the NPSL national game of the week.
Vaqueros coach Nick Stavrou was satisfied with the victory despite the late surge by Midland.
“Just a great performance, obviously we came out strong in the first half,” Stavrou said. “It got a little bit too close in the second half as they poured on some pressure but an outstanding performance by the guys.”
The Vaqueros return to action Saturday on the road to Houston Dutch Lions.
